Transport group Arriva is doing its bit for the environment. The group that turned over £909 million in the six months to 30 June is testing a fuel based on a mixture of soya, used cooking oil and normal ultra low sulphur diesel known as B20.
The tests started in July on 75 buses operating from Arriva's Blyth depot in Northumberland which carry around 130,000 passengers a week.
Chief executive David Martin believes the trial is the first of its kind in the UK and if successful should lead to a 14% reduction in CO2 emissions.
Arriva's potential changed dramatically in July when it won the old Virgin Cross Country franchise which is expected to add £600 million to its annual turnover, or nearly £5 billion over the life of the franchise which runs from 11 November this year to 31 March 2016.
Stretching from Aberdeen to Penzance, and from Stansted to Cardiff, the New Cross Country franchise covers about 1,500 miles and calls at more than 100 stations.
